Belgium - Early Belgium used bliss of about 200 stamps on four black stockpages, starting with a near-full page of King Leopold I issues in all three denominations. These have been selected for their socked-on-the-nose numeral cancels, most of which are very easily readable, and we expect the stamps will have enormous catalogue value, but with some condition issues. The balance of the collection stretches into the early 1900’s with each stamp individually selected for its readable cancel. We can’t overemphasize how stunning this lot is. Estimate =

Bermuda #124a/127a. A pair of lower right corner blocks of the King George VI "Keyplate" issue with the 2/6 and 12/6 values, each with a cylinder number. Both have a fresh appearance and a bit of discoloration at the bottom. This is natural, due to the acidic gum used during the Second World War, the gum is quite browned, some collectors mistakenly believe that this is due to poor storage, but it is the result of wartime necessity. Both are never hinged. Showpieces! 2024 Scott US$536.00 =

British Commonwealth - Collections from nine South African colonies, from the 1890's to the 1950's, nicely mounted on quadrilled pages. All used, with little, if any, duplication, with lots of readable cancels and better single stamps throughout. The owner has catalogued by page with Rhodesia (catalogue $215.00), North Rhodesia ($26.00), South Rhodesia ($128.00). The forerunners to South Africa include: Cape of Good Hope ($133.00), Natal ($38.00), Orange Free State ($48.00) and Transvaal ($138.00 - with values to £1). The South Africa includes a number of early pairs and a couple of JIPEX ’36 booklet panes ($381.00) and the South West Africa section is relatively small but packed with value with lots of better overprinted pairs ($360.00). All housed in a springback binder. For those who like "old school" collections. Total 2024 Scott US$1467.00 =

British Commonwealth - Matching duo / set of (Volume 1 and Volume 2) of the green Stanley Gibbons published "New Imperial Postage Stamp Album" with pages for GB and the Commonwealth from QV to George V (we did note some Edward VIII spots as well when applicable). While the albums themselves could be the star of the show, there is also a total of 1964 mint and (mostly) used stamps from across the Commonwealth, with particular strength in India and States. The previous owner states that a rough / superficial count approximated the catalogue value in Gibbons to be about £1800.00 ($3340.00 CDN). The albums themselves have some wear, but lots of life left in them. Estimate =

British Commonwealth - Minkus "British Europe" album with pages to 1972, with an impressed binder and a (battered) dust jacket. The Great Britain is easily the strongest section, with a 2+ margin "Penny Black", an interestingly cut #5 (probably from the top of the sheet showing some of the lower stamp). There is reasonable coverage throughout the Queen Victoria period, but the collector had some doubts about proper identification, and includes some official overprints. There is reasonable coverage into the QEII decimal period. Several of the higher denomination stamps have perfins. There is a touch of Gibraltar, Malta and Ireland. Estimate =

British Commonwealth - The stunning one-volume red Stanley Gibbons published "Imperial Stamp Album" with pages for GB and the Commonwealth from QV to George V. This was likely one of the last examples of the one-volume that covered the Commonwealth, before shifting to the 2-volume version (also in this sale). While looking a bit sparse at first glance, there are 558 stamps throughout, with strength in Canada, Mauritius and Transvaal. The album itself is in fair condition, with some collector added clear mounts, which could be reused or removed. Estimate =

Canada #37/1154. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II focused collection mounted on Darnell printed pages in a 3-ring binder with lots of collector-added clear mounts. There is a bit of earlier material, mostly used and sparse. By the 1940’s the collection picks up with both regular and "back of the book". We noted never hinged sets of the 1942 War issue and a single of the Ferry dollar from the Peace issue overprinted "G". From 1950 to 1987, the collection is primarily mint and quite complete, including coil singles, souvenir sheets, miniature panes, some booklets and more from the "back of the book". Canada Covers - First Day Covers. Remarkable holding of about 900, mostly different, private First Day cover cachets in albums and piles, desperately needing sorting and discovery. From 1948 to about 1985 with about a dozen different cachet makers represented. The 1960’s to 1970’s is often Rosecraft, but we noted about 50 long "Schering" FDCs. The strength is about a 10-year run each of "NR" and "Fleetwood" cachets. The "NR" covers are a bit primitive and were produced in relatively small quantities and we rarely see such a complete offering. Fleetwood covers are much more sophisticated but were very pricey (e.g. the 1983 Canada Day series of 12 covers cost US$30.00!). Gibraltar #558/1111, J1/J19, MR1. Mint accumulation Part B: One collector’s duplicates covering 1989-2007, and what a group it is. Housed in two near-new 64-black page Lighthouse stockbooks (one with a black cover, the other a dark green), each stamp is identified with its Scott number. This is a very complete run, but lots of space has been left to allow the stamps to breathe. Up to 10 of a type, all appear to be never hinged. Notable examples include #631-644 (3 sets), #777-793, postage dues. The first few years looks like a stock with a near-complete run of issues in quantity. By the mid-1990s, there is still lots of completeness, but the holding looks more like a collection with 1 or 2 examples of each). Part of this is due to the prolific issuance policy of this Mediterranean colony, but the face value and catalogue value is extensive. Most individual sets in these stockbooks catalogue $5.00-$10.00 EACH. Huge original face value and catalogue value, with extensive potential for the topical collector or dealer. Plus stockbooks that retail at over $100.00 Estimate =

Great Britain #1/288. Mint and used collection on quadrilled pages in a near-new green "Simplex" springback binder with stamps up to the end of the King George VI era. There is a homemade tribute to the Penny Black on its Centenary, with a nice zero-margin copy of #1 with a red Maltese cancel. The first section of the album is the mint material, a bit sparse, but with 10 values from the Queen Victoria "Jubilee" issue up to the 1/-, looking fresh. The larger section is the used. QV includes some "Penny Reds", definitives to 5/- (a few are damaged or could use a soaking/pressing). For King Edward VII, it looks like an attempt was made at a shade study (with individual stamps to 10/-). King George V and VI includes more shades, several "Seahorses" to 10/-. The potential bonus to this lot is that the collector tucked a number of stamps into the folds of the album, which includes some better, but is generally unchecked by us. A few hundred stamps here, lots of catalogue value, with some potential for the specialist. Estimate =

Papua New Guinea #50/1202. It’s been a while since we offered a large accumulation of mostly modern and mostly postally used Papua New Guinea. Of particular note, is 120 examples of #39 selected for the town cancels (you can tell much of this collection was put together with cancel interest in mind). Syria #5/169. Attractive mint selection of overprints on during the French administration, in several different styles and both overprints of the 1924 Olympics. While some of the earlier definitives appear to be toned, this isn’t due to mishandling as these were the French wartime printings on low quality paper, which were subsequently doled out for use in "the Colonies". Thailand and Vietnam - Used, mounted collection on quadrilled pages in a "Simplex" springback binder, with a good range of pre-1980 issues, including many nicer $5-$10 stamps and sometimes even better than that (noting Vietnam #33 and #35).
