Originally produced for the 1864 Great Central Fair in Philadelphia, to pay for Civil War soldier’s mail that was sent postage due. These Sanitary Fair stamps are semi-official, produced in conjunction with the local postmaster. Unofficial reprints were produced by Schernikow in 1903 in a range of formats and colours. This is the 10c and 30c "Eagle" denominations in claret on India paper (three hinge remnants on back). Very striking pair. The original is unpriced in Scott Specialized. Exceptional items, any USA or topical collectors are going to want to get in on this attractive duo. Estimate =
