FOX TALES ON STAMPS

Edition #637  Friday, October 13, 2017

Yesteryear's Shows and Shop

After Andrew went to the CALTAPEX show in Calgary, we thought we'd review our files for some show and shop photos of yesteryear. Many of you may remember the ten year run of Great Western Stamp Shows, organized by Andrew Blanchard and David Allen. These shows were held at the Best Western Richmond Inn and hosted as many as thirty different dealer booths, as well as auctions and bidboards.

Four of the show participants, from left to right: BC Philatelic club members Kevin Lesk, Andrew's show partner David Allen, Clive Bellian and Great Western Stamp Show hospitality supervisor Frances Blanchard at the BC Phil table

Ian and Elizabeth Kimmerly were attendees of the show from day one.

The late great Albert Tanner always had the largest offering of cards and covers of any dealer attending the Great Western Stamp Show. Here, Bill Liaskas, Gray Scrimgeour and Bill Pekonen pan for gems in some of Albert's boxes.

Five mugs from the BC Philatelic Society. Members Duff Malkin and Bob Ingraham at the BC Phil table.

The ability to create backing walls with the room's partitions for most of the dealer booths was great for security and privacy.

The Steveston Auction gang were able to run several auctions during the course of the three day show. Trixie and Les Garvey, travelling stamp show stalwarts, still attend dozens of stamp shows annually.

Another of the Vancouver shows was (and still is) VANPEX. Derren Carman, Fritz Graf and Leslie Upton are three of the movers and shakers who make it possible.

Here are the relatively younger Deveney brothers and the much younger Andrew Blanchard at their first VANPEX table. Father Dave must have wandered off.

Weeda Stamps, Suite 706, 525 Seymour Street, Vancouver. In the Vancouver incarnations of Weeda Stamps we had offices in the lobby of the St. Francis Hotel on West Cordova, at 569 Richards Street, 420 West Pender and finally on the 7th floor at 525 Seymour Street.

The Saturday bidboard was a fixture of the Vancouver philatelic circuit. We had parties as often as we could.

I still can't believe we were able to get everything sold, invoiced and mailed in a few hours.

One of our favourite parties was "Donna Day" where we recognized Donna McCairns' indispensible contribution to Weeda Stamps. Also in the picture from left to right are Mike Strachan, Dave Catton, Ken Hegler, Herbert Pauw, Tia Strachan, Bill Busay, Ken Ng and Bill Jaster. Mike Strachan took over Donna's responsibilities after Donna's retirement from Weeda Stamps.

George Moffat was another Saturday regular. Tasked with taking down the old and putting up the new bidboard lots. When Scottie Turner was in town, George had an able helper.

From left to right: Ken Ng, Ian Lew, me and John Yee.

In some customer's memories, Weeda Stamps was as good a spot for a snack as it was a place to acquire new stamps.
